Airbus Helicopters will highlight a wide range of products and digital services at this year’s Helitech International air show, taking place October 16-18 in Amsterdam. Special focus will be given to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) missions, a segment the company leads with 60% of the in-service fleet, thanks to its long expertise and wide range of dedicated solutions.

On the stand (Hall 8, booth E60), will be an EMS-configured H145 in operation with Dutch operator ANWB. One of the company’s best sellers for such demanding missions thanks to its high performance and spacious cabin, this light twin helicopter is also extremely versatile and can quickly convert from EMS to other roles such as disaster relief or mountain rescue, thanks to its optional equipment and a plug-and-play design philosophy.

Show goers will be able to take a close look at a full scale mock-up of the H160 fitted in an EMS configuration. With the largest cabin in its class, wide opening sliding door and roll-in stretcher capacity, the H160 is the next generation high intensive care helicopter ideal for long distances critical patient or incubator transport.

In the static display, visitors will have the opportunity to see a H175 equipped for oil & gas missions and operated by Heli-Holland. The company will also present an update on Airbus’ Skywise offer for helicopters. UK operator HeliGroup has taken delivery of the first ever ACH135 Helionix for VIP charter operations from Airbus Corporate Helicopters at the Monaco Yacht Club during the annual yacht show in the Principality.

The handover event was attended by representatives of global aviation and yachting industries and supported by the Royal Air Force Red Arrows, guests of honour following their air display at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Following in the footsteps of the UK Ministry of Defence, which took delivery of the first H135 Helionix in 2017, HeliGroup selected the aircraft in the lightweight, sports car-inspired ACH Line interior fit configured with the ACH135 five-seater business configuration.  In this way, HeliGroup becomes the first VIP charter company worldwide to mark the introduction of the ACH135’s step change Helionix capability to private and business aviation.

Rheinmetall has won another major order in Australia. The Duesseldorf, Germany-based tech enterprise has been selected to supply the Australian Defence Force with more than a thousand additional military trucks and modules. Just signed, the contract is worth €430 million. The Commonwealth of Australia has thus acted on a procurement decision already announced in July 2018.

Delivery is scheduled to commence in 2019 and be complete in 2024.

The latest purchase forms part of Australia’s Land 121 Phase 5B project. Rheinmetall has already proved its mettle in earlier phase of the project, 3B, under which it is currently supplying Australia with 2,500 medium- and heavyweight military trucks worth a total of €1.2 billion. The trucks ship out from the Group’s plant in Brisbane, where final integration and acceptance testing takes place before delivery to the Commonwealth.

Colin James, Airbus Helicopters’ UK Managing Director, formally handed over the latest Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS) H125 helicopter to Nic Anderson, Managing Director Air and Space, Qinetiq.  Under the current modernization programme, the world-renown test pilot flight school will receive four H125s, which will make up ETPS’ new generation, single-engine helicopter fleet.  Minister of State for Defence Earl Howe visited the aircraft as part of the handover and met both Airbus Helicopters and Qinetiq to show his support for the latest addition to the ETPS fleet.

All four ETPS H125 will be delivered following complex customization by Airbus Helicopters’ UK design team, which equips the aircraft with, among other things, a 3-axis autopilot, dedicated communications equipment and a traffic awareness system.  In addition, the aircraft will be equipped with a Flight Test Instrumentation suite which, similar to Formula 1 telemetry data, transmits data to the ETPS base at Boscombe Down in real time allowing students, both in practical and class-based environments, to test and evaluate aircraft design and performance.

Hong Kong based Government Flying Service (GFS) has received three H175s in public services configuration, becoming the world’s first operator of this new variant which enlarges the H175 mission capacity to search and rescue (SAR), emergency medical services, law enforcement, firefighting as well as land and maritime border control operations.

In 2015, GFS became the launch customer of the H175 in public services version with an order for seven helicopters. The four remaining helicopters will be delivered before the end of the year.

“The Government Flying Service has been very involved in the development of this new H175 version and it is a great honor to be here today to receive the first three aircraft”, said Michael Chan, Controller Head of GFS. “Thanks to the H175’s speed, advanced technology and versatility we will not only be able to strengthen our response capability but also be able to intervene in the most complex situations and in a large variety of scenarios.”

GFS’s new H175 will progressively replace their current fleet of AS332 L2 and H155, which currently provide 24-hour emergency support services from their base at Chek Lap Kok Airport.

The public service version of the H175 benefits from more than twenty cabin configurations which can be easily re-configured based on mission requirements. The great versatility of the aircraft is backed by approximately seventy different types of optional equipment which include an electro-optical system for observation and tracking and a digital map display, both of being managed by an operator’s console installed in the cabin. Mission equipment also includes a dual hoist, a search light, an infrared camera, as well as a radioactivity detector, which is a GFS-specific equipment.

The H175 benefits from the latest developments of Airbus Helicopters’ state-of-the-art Helionix avionics suite, which bolsters the helicopter’s search and rescue capabilities with advanced SAR modes, allowing for instance the aircraft to hover automatically above moving vessels. 

Today, joined by representatives from industry and government, Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) celebrated the start of construction on the first Joint Support Ship (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).

The steel cutting ceremony held at Vancouver Shipyards is a significant milestone for Seaspan, the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and Canada’s shipbuilding industry. With the start of construction on JSS, Seaspan is leading the way in rebuilding Canada’s shipbuilding industry. Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. today announced the establishment of GatorWorks, a newly formed prototyping arm within Pratt & Whitney that will focus on the rapid and agile development of dependable, lower cost military engines. Pratt & Whitney GatorWorks' objective is to deliver state-of-the-art engines in half the lead time and for half the cost of traditional procurement cycles.

"The standard large engine development cycle is roughly 20 years. Our customers have asked for rapid innovation, technology development and new product introduction. Commerce Decisions, a QinetiQ company, has secured a strategically important contract with the Government of Canada to support the competitive procurement process to replace Canada’s fighter fleet with 88 advanced jets.

As outlined in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, Canada will purchase the fighter aircraft to contribute to the safety and security of Canadians and to meet Canada’s international obligations. A modern fighter jet fleet is essential for defending Canada and Canadian sovereignty and to contribute to its NORAD and NATO commitments, now and in the future. The acquisition will include associated equipment, weapons, and sustainment set-up and services to ensure a Canadian Fighter capability that leverages Canadian industry capabilities and contributes to economic growth and jobs.

Commerce Decisions, in conjunction with QinetiQ Ltd and QinetiQ Group Canada Ltd has been awarded the contract via Department for National Defence’s (DND) TSPS Supply Arrangement (Task and Solutions Professional Services) following a competitive bidding process. The Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP) is being run by DND, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), and Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED); Commerce Decisions will support the development of the Bid Evaluation Plan for the competitive procurement process, as well as support PSPC in its oversight role of the Bid Evaluation process. The work includes support in preparing the evaluation strategy, methodology, and associated criteria & weightings, leading to the production of bid evaluation guidelines and plans.

The F-35 Joint Program Office and Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] delivered the 300th production F-35 aircraft, demonstrating the program’s continued progress and momentum. The 300th aircraft is a U.S. Air Force F-35A, to be delivered to Hill Air Force Base, Utah.

"The F-35 weapons system is a key enabler of our National Defense Strategy and is providing our warfighters the combat proven, advanced capabilities they need to meet mission requirements," said Vice Admiral Mat Winter, program executive officer for the F-35 Joint Program Office. "The 300th production aircraft delivery is a significant milestone that highlights the effective F-35 Enterprise collaboration across the JPO, U.S. services, partners and industry. Moving forward, our F-35 team remains committed to driving costs down, quality up and faster delivery timelines across our development, production and sustainment lines of effort."

The first 300 F-35s include 197 F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variants, 75 F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variants, and 28 F-35C carrier variants (CV) and have been delivered to U.S. and international customers. More than 620 pilots and 5,600 maintainers have been trained, and the F-35 fleet has surpassed more than 140,000 cumulative flight hours.

“This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our joint government and industry team as we collaborate to deliver transformational F-35 capabilities to the men and women in uniform,” said Greg Ulmer, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager of the F-35 program. “We are focused on reducing costs, increasing efficiencies, and ensuring the highest level of quality as we ramp to full rate production and sustainment of the operational fleet.”

Increasing Production, Reducing Costs

As production volume increases and additional efficiencies are implemented, Lockheed Martin is on track to reduce the cost of an F-35A to $80 million by 2020, which is equal to or less than legacy 4th generation aircraft. With the incorporation of lessons learned, process efficiencies, production automation, facility and tooling upgrades, supply chain initiatives and more, the F-35 enterprise has already significantly reduced costs and improved efficiency. For example:

•   The price of an F-35A has come down more than 60 percent from the first contract.

•   Touch labor has been reduced by about 75 percent over the last five years.

•   Production span time has decreased by about 20 percent since 2015.

The F-35 enterprise met its 2017 delivery target of 66 aircraft, representing more than a 40 percent increase from 2016. In 2018, the team is targeting 91 aircraft deliveries and is preparing to increase production volume year-over-year to hit a rate of approximately 160 aircraft in 2023.

IMP Aerospace announced that it has been awarded a contract by the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) following an international competitive bidding process for the maintenance of the P-3 Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft fleet operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF). This multi-year contract includes additional In-Service Support (ISS) work beyond maintenance inspections and will be performed at IMP’s operations in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The P-3 Orion aircraft perform strategic patrol missions for the RNoAF in the detection of submarine threats, search and rescue support, littoral surveillance, as well as economic zone and shipping lane protection off the coast of Norway.

These purpose-built vessels will play a vital role in meeting Canada’s domestic and international obligations and will fully meet the operational needs of the RCN. By starting construction on JSS, Seaspan is able to realize continuous production and ensure further progress is made on its National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) commitments. This move demonstrates the value of the long-term, strategic partnership established between the Government of Canada and Seaspan under the NSS.

Canada’s shipbuilding industry has been rebuilt thanks to the NSS. To date, Seaspan has $600M in committed contracts and engaged approximately 500 Canadian firms thanks to its NSS-related work alone. At its peak, work on JSS will contribute towards sustaining an estimated 1,000 jobs at Seaspan.

The JSS will be designated the Protecteur-class in recognition of the distinguished service provided by Canada’s former replenishment oilers – Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Protecteur and Preserver.

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK and Thales Deutschland have jointly been commissioned to deliver the combat system of the German Class K130 Corvette. The order comprises 5 corvettes as well as the Test and Training Centre (EZ/BUZ) in Wilhelmshaven.

With completion scheduled for 2025, the “FüWES K130” consortium formed by the two companies and led by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK will deliver the combat system hardware and also adapt and update the existing Combat Management System software of the K130, first batch (ship 1-5).

The contracted solution for Ship 6-10 is identical to the original contract (2003) for the K130, first batch. In line with the re-build requirement, changes in the solution are only related to obsolescence and compliancy with German regulations. Regulations regarding Safety and IT Security are significantly aggravated since commissioning the first batch of corvettes.

Although the industrial situation has changed over the past years, the existing K130 combat system knowledge is preserved within the companies concerned. For this reason, ATLAS ELEKTRONIK will remain responsible for the operational software and Thales will remain responsible for an IT secure combat system infrastructure.

The new K130 program leverages a proven combination of sensors and software. The rotating version of the TRS-4D radar system by HENSOLDT has been selected by Germany for the K130 program. This comes after TRS-4D (nonrotating) was introduced in the F125 frigate program where it is integrated with the ANCS CMS by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK. Both companies are responding to the current competition for the future German multi-purpose combat ship MKS180. ATLAS ELEKTRONIK and HENSOLDT are partnered in the ALION led bid for the Canadian Surface Combatant program.

L3 MAS announced today that it has teamed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to form Team Artemis to offer the state-of-the-art Artemis Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), based on IAI’s Heron TP, for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) program.

L3 MAS will be the prime contractor for the team, building on its extensive In-Service Support (ISS), airworthiness, integrated logistics and program management experience. It will also lead the Artemis Canadian industrial team, including Pratt & Whitney Canada, which will provide the power plant for the air vehicle, as well as other prominent Canadian partners to be named at a later date. The Artemis solution will deliver substantial economic benefits to Canada, including the creation of high-value Canadian jobs.

Under the RPAS program, the Department of National Defence (DND) will procure a number of MALE UAS aircraft, with associated Ground Control Stations (GCS), sensor suites and support equipment. The contract is scheduled to be awarded in 2021-2022 and will include the acquisition of the equipment and the full spectrum of In-Service Support for 20 years.

OSI Maritime Systems (OSI) announced the signing of a contract with Lockheed Martin to provide its Integrated Bridge and Navigation System (IBNS) for the first four ships of the Royal Saudi Navy’s (RSN) Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) program. 

OSI will build and deliver a military grade system for the MMSC program based on the system designed for the U.S. Navy Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program.

The company was awarded the LCS-27 contract by Lockheed Martin in November 2017.

OTTAWA, CANADA, April 26, 2018 – This morning, New Zealand Secretary of Defence Helene Quilter and Commanding Officer Commander (Navy) Steve Lenik, Royal New Zealand Navy, transferred Her Majesty’s New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) TE KAHA into the care of Lockheed Martin Canada (NYSE: LMT) and Seaspan Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd in Victoria, BC, to commence the shipyard industrial refit phase of the ANZAC Frigate Systems Upgrade project.

This marks the first time that a foreign warship has been modernized in Canada since the Second World War.

“For the past four years, Lockheed Martin Canada’s Combat System Integration team has been preparing for this day by designing, integrating and testing the Combat System as well as the ship platform design changes for HMNZ Ships TE KAHA and TE MANA next year. Rheinmetall is protecting a new naval port for an international customer. The multiphase contract is a worth a double-digit euro million figure. It includes the installation of state-of-the-art sensor and advanced command and control technology to protect the equipment from unauthorized access, damage and sabotage. Work will begin in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2021.

To protect the infrastructure, a network of different sensors - different day and night vision cameras, radars, proximity sensors and sonars – will be used to maintain a comprehensive picture of the situation. An international customer has contracted with Rheinmetall to supply it with artillery and tank ammunition worth a total of round €380 million; the order intake was booked in Q1 2018. MBDA and Lockheed Martin have jointly completed qualification of MBDA’s Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) from Lockheed Martin’s Extensible Launching System (ExLS) 3-Cell Stand Alone Launcher following a series of trials.

ExLS is a low-cost alternative for integrating new missiles and munitions into naval surface combatants leveraging Lockheed Martin’s proven Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) design and electronics.

The compact vertical launch 3-cell ExLS system is specifically designed for smaller naval platforms that are unable to accommodate the larger 8-cell MK 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS). ExLS has also been designed to fit inside the MK 41 launcher (ie ExLS Host), offering flexible, adaptable installation solutions for larger ships to achieve high combat mass within a small on-board footprint.

MBDA’s CAMM is a highly compact missile that enables multiple weapons to be fitted in limited spaces. It is the most modern air defence missile of its class on the market and has recently completed a highly successful series of firings by the Royal Navy. When operated from ExLS or MK 41 VLSD, CAMM comes in a quad-pack arrangement which allows to store and fire 4 missiles from a single cell. These latest trials from 3-cell ExLS were successfully completed in the United Kingdom at the end of 2017.

This order, the first from a Latin American customer, came after a flight demonstration in Marignane where the customer experienced first-hand the step-change in passenger comfort that the H160 brings to the market.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas, Mar. 23, 2018 – Airbus Helicopters, Inc. has received a contract modification valued at approximately $116 million to deliver 16 additional UH-72A Lakotas for the United States Army. The contract is the company’s second this year, highlighting the U.S. Army’s confidence and growth capability of the Lakota program.

This new contract includes the UH-72A production aircraft, associated technical and flight operator manuals and program management in training configuration for the Initial Entry Rotary Wing mission at Ft. The UH-72A is a twin-engine utility helicopter used for a wide range of military operations including troop and light cargo transport, MEDEVAC, VIP transport, border security, and Homeland Defense.

Airbus has delivered more than 423 UH-72A Lakota aircraft from its facilities in Columbus, Miss., since the award of the first contract in 2005.  The new contract enhances the Lakota fleet and its training mission. With additional aircraft in the fleet, Lakota operators have more capability to conduct and support disaster relief and counter-drug operations in support of civil agencies or national emergencies.  

Available in multiple configurations, the UH 72A Lakota is the lowest cost to buy, own and operate of any U.S. military helicopter in production.  The Lakota is a key component of the Army’s Aviation Restructuring Initiative (ARI) and the primary rotary-wing trainer for the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker, Ala.

The UH 72A Lakota is fielded in and out of the Continental United States in several different configurations, performing a number of essential missions for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and the National Guard.

Today, representatives of two Canadian Army regiments, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Royal 22e Régiment, participated in a commemorative hockey game in the City of Paju in the Republic of Korea. The Imjin Classic 2018 was held to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and pay homage to the competitive spirit of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The Imjin Classic 2018 was played at the Yulgok Wetland Park, near the original site of the original hockey games. It was organized by the Embassy of Korea in Canada and Paju City in partnership with the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The game coincided with the passage of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games torch relay in Paju City. This leg of the relay featured Canada’s Ambassador to Korea, Eric Walsh, and Canadian Korean War veteran, Colonel (Retired) Charland as torch bearers.

Members of the PPCLI and R22eR were joined by Canadians living in the Republic of Korea and played as “Team Canada” in a friendly game against “Team Corea”, made up of players from Yonsei University and Korea University. Outdoors, in front of a lively crowd, “Team Canada” won the Imjin Cup.

The Royal Navy has successfully conducted the final First of Class firing trials of the new Sea Ceptor air defence system – completing the qualification firings of this cutting-edge new capability for the Royal Navy.

Following on from the first round of trials this summer, the second set of trials from HMS Argyll saw the system tested against more complex scenarios, including rapidly engaging multiple simultaneous threats.

With HMS Argyll having completed development testing of Sea Ceptor, the weapon system is now being rolled out to the Royal Navy’s other Type 23 Frigates.

Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) today celebrated the launch of the first large vessel to be designed and built under the Government of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) - OFSV1, the first of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV).

In 2011, the Government of Canada competitively selected Seaspan to be its Non-Combat Shipbuilder as part of the NSS program. Under the NSS, Seaspan will build and deliver non-combat vessels at the company's state-of-the-art facility in North Vancouver for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and Royal Canadian Navy. OFSV1 is the first large vessel to be designed, built and launched under the NSS. It represents an important milestone in Seaspan's long-term strategic relationship with the Government of Canada.

The third H160 prototype has received a fresh coat of paint and now features a striking “carbon” livery designed as a nod to the Airbus A350 XWB MSN2 flight-test aircraft. Both aircraft are produced using advanced composite materials supplied by Airbus’ long term partner, Hexcel.

Babcock and BMT have signed a cooperation agreement, which outlines the principles of a strategic relationship that will see the companies collaborate to support the Design, Build, Construction and Support of future classes of Surface Ships for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and other international projects.

The initial focus will be cooperation on the recently announced Type31e programme and the ability to offer a world-leading UK design alliance solution to the MoD.

The new arrangement draws on the combined strengths of Babcock and BMT and will deliver innovative, capable, affordable and flexible customer solutions, within a fast changing and increasingly demanding environment. Both organisations will jointly explore their available designs to determine the best possible option that meets the cost, capability, and delivery requirements of the Royal Navy.

On November 3, at VIA Rail’s Ottawa station, Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, President and CEO of VIA Rail Canada, and David Flannigan, Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion, will announce their partnership which aims to pay tribute to Canadian Veterans and launch VIA Rail’s national Poppy Campaign. MBDA is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Allam to the role of MBDA UK Managing Director and to MBDA’s Group Executive Committee. The appointment will become effective on 1 January 2018. He replaces Dave Armstrong who is leaving MBDA at the end of 2017 to join BAE Systems’ newly formed Air Sector as Director, Europe and International.

As Managing Director of MBDA UK, Chris will be the senior representative of MBDA in the UK and lead the top level relationships between MBDA and the UK customer and industrial community.

Chris joins MBDA from BAE Systems where he is the Managing Director Future Programmes and Services, and Engineering Director for the Military Air and Information Business.

Chris has worked for BAE Systems since 1988. He is a Graduate of the University of Hertfordshire where he gained a BEng in Aeronautical engineering. Chris is also a Fellow of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The ELECTER parallel hybrid drive demonstrator from RENAULT TRUCKS Defense (RTD), the subject of an "Upstream Study Programme" (PEA) assigned by the DGA in 2012, has undergone testing in the last three years covering more than 5000 km, half of which in all-terrain conditions. It is on show at the Summer School of the MEDEF, the French employers' federation.

Offering a foretaste of how the military hardware of the future is to be equipped, this PEA, presented before the tests in 2014, demonstrated the reliability, robustness and performance of this concept over two years of particularly demanding tests, under conditions close to the operational realities.

This PEA, assigned to RENAULT TRUCKS Defense on 21 December 2012, is now at an end, with 7 different operating modes validated and able to be installed on the company's products, with a view to fulfilling the requirements of modern military operations.

RTD can therefore propose Hybrid mode, for reduced fuel consumption; Furtive mode, for silent travel; Booster mode, for quick acceleration of manoeuvres; Quick recharge mode for the drive battery; APU with battery, enabling silent standby without onboard generators; APU with combustion engine, offering high-level electrical power; and Diesel, for travel in partial mission capable mode.

MBDA’s Sea Venom / ANL anti-ship missile has successfully completed its first firing at the Île du Levant test range in France.

Conducted in June, the first firing is a major milestone for the Anglo-French missile; developed to deliver an enhanced capability and replace existing and legacy systems such as the UK-developed Sea Skua and the French-developed AS15TT anti-ship missiles.

The trial of the 100 kg-class missile was conducted from a Dauphin test bed helicopter owned by the DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement – the French defence procurement agency).

Frank Bastart, head of the Sea Venom/ANL programme at MBDA, said: “The missile trial was a complete success, and is a proud moment for the company and all those involved in the project. When it enters service Sea Venom/ANL will provide a major increase in capability to the French and UK armed forces.”

In early January, KF Aerospace, through its subsidiary KF Aerospace Defence Programs, received a contract award from Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) to provide a new Bell 206 Level 7 Flight Training Device (FTD) for the Contracted Flying Training and Support (CFTS) Program located in Southport, Manitoba. This new capability, representing a capital investment of over CAD $6.5 million, is part of a larger scope of work by KF Aerospace Defence Programs to provide the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) with Primary, Basic, Rotary-Wing, and Multi-engine pilot training at CFTS until 2027.

Lockheed Martin Canada has been shortlisted by the Finnish Defence Forces to compete for the role of Combat Systems Contractor for the Finnish Navy’s new corvette program, known as Squadron 2020. Four ice-capable Squadron 2020 vessels are designed to replace the Finnish Rauma-class fast-attack missile boats and Hämeenmaa-class minelayers that will reach the end of their life-cycle by the mid-2020s

In December 2016, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) issued a qualification solicitation to 12 international combat system integration companies.  The FDF has now shortlisted three companies to move forward over the next year in a competition. The selected Combat Systems Contractor will work with the native shipyard, Rauma Marine Constructions, to deliver the new ships. “This is a fantastic testament to our Canadian developed CMS 330 and integration capability – further validation of our world-leading offer in the international naval systems market.  This is also another exciting export opportunity, not only for us, but for our Canadian suppliers who will support our combat management system and integration delivery efforts, should we win.  Work on this program would be performed in our Kanata, Montreal, and Halifax locations; including manufacturing of the combat management system hardware in our production facility in Ottawa as well as software and systems development, integrated systems testing and trials in our Montreal and Halifax facilities,” said Rosemary Chapdelaine, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Canada RMS (Rotary and Missions Systems).

MBDA has successfully conducted air carriage and jettison trials of its cutting-edge Sea Venom/ANL anti-ship missile on board the Lynx Mk 8 naval helicopter.

The trials have validated that the missile can be integrated onto the Lynx and Super Lynx helicopters, which remain in frontline service with many customers worldwide.

Sea Venom/ANL has been developed to deliver an enhanced capability to replace existing and legacy systems such as the UK-developed Sea Skua and the French-developed AS15TT anti-ship missiles.

Working together through the Defence Growth Partnership (DGP) initiative, the trials were conducted by MBDA in collaboration with the UK Defence Solutions Centre (DSC), the Royal Navy and QinetiQ.

The trials were undertaken in March at the Larkhill Range at Boscombe Down, and saw a Royal Navy Lynx Mk8 successfully conduct a series of air carriage trials prior to jettisoning two Sea Venom missiles fitted with telemetry kits. The outcome of the trials has been a de-risking of the integration process of Sea Venom on both the Lynx and Super Lynx helicopters for the export market.

The 100 kg-class missile is one of the products of France and the United Kingdom’s highly-successful collaboration on missile technologies. In UK service the missile is planned to be used from the AW159 Wildcat helicopter, while in France the DGA (Direction générale de l’armement – the French defence procurement agency) is currently conducting the development flight campaign for the missile on a Panther test bed helicopter. The new trials on board the Lynx Mk 8 validate that the missile can be easily integrated onto any platform.

Sea Venom is a modern primarily anti-ship missile designed to destroy vessels ranging from FIAC (Fast Inshore Attack Craft), through medium sized FAC (Fast Attack Craft) up to large vessels such as Corvettes from safe stand-off ranges. This missile also has a surface attack capability against coastal and land targets. Unlike legacy semi-active radar guided missiles, Sea Venom uses an imaging infrared seeker that offers ‘fire-and-forget’ capabilities in even the most complex littoral environments. The missile is the natural choice for militaries wishing to replace or enhance their rotary-wing anti-ship capabilities

The F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet has successfully conducted its first firing trials of the MBDA

Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM).

The trials are the first time a British-designed missile has been fired from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter,

and the first time any non-US missile has been fired from the aircraft.

Rheinmetall has just booked an order from the US Air Force to supply ammunition for the F-35 stealth multirole fighter. The contract, worth over US$6.5 million (6.2 € million), encompasses the supply of several ten thousand rounds in four lots. Delivery starts in December 2017.

The order is of major strategic significance to Rheinmetall for two reasons. For one thing, the US Air Force is currently procuring the F-35 on a large scale, with 1,200 planes on order.

Delta, BC – Seaspan Ferries Corporation (SFC) is pleased to announce the arrival of the Seaspan Reliant, the second of two new dual-fuelled/hybrid (diesel, liquefied natural gas and battery) ferries to its fleet.

The new state-of-the-art vessel, currently docked at the SFC Tilbury Terminal in Delta, arrived home after an eight-week journey that spanned a total of 10,661 nautical miles following its construction at Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey.

“The arrival of the Seaspan Reliant marks a proud milestone in the history of Seaspan Ferries Corporation,” said Steve Roth –President, Seaspan Ferries. “With the introduction of a second new technologically advanced, LNG-fuelled vessel to our fleet, we are living out a clear commitment to our drop-trailer customers as well to the waterways in which we operate. As with the Seaspan Swift, the Seaspan Reliant will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions dramatically compared to other current alternatives while delivering the highest level of efficiency, performance and reliability.”

The 148.9 metre ferry, which can accommodate up to 59, 53’ trailers, will now undergo a series of regulatory inspections and crew training programs throughout March before entering operation in April.

The Seaspan Reliant, along with its sister ship the Seaspan Swift - which arrived in December 2016 and entered operation in January 2017, mark the first vessels added to SFC’s fleet since 2002.

Seaspan Ferries Corporation currently operates a fleet of seven ferries out of five terminals in British Columbia, and supplies more than 50% of all cargo to Vancouver Island.

OTTAWA, February 23, 2017 – By filing an application for judicial review on January 6th 2017 before the Federal Court, Team Spartan formally challenged the decision of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to award the FWSAR Contract to Airbus.
 
Team Spartan’s main allegation is that the selected airplane is unfit to safely perform certain key Search and Rescue tasks and missions required by Canada and should have been, therefore, disqualified.
 
Based on the above, Team Spartan has applied to the Federal Court for an order requesting that Canada cancel the contract with Airbus and award same to Leonardo.
 
Team Spartan remains committed to ensuring that Canada receives the best cost-effective solution for the FWSAR mission.

MBDA has successfully tested the lightweight missile, known as Enforcer, as part of its ongoing development programme. The multinational Enforcer team scored several highly accurate hits during guided firings carried out at the trials facility of the German Bundeswehr’s Technical Center for Weapons and Ammunition 91 in November 2016. 

The firings with the Enforcer development prototype were conducted at ranges of between 1,000m to 2,000 m and confirmed expectations with regard to the weapon’s homing head, which guided the missile directly to the centre of each of the intended targets. One of the missiles used the new lightweight, carbon-fibre launching tube developed by MBDA in Italy. 

“These tests have topped off a successful year of Enforcer development, a year we can look back on and recognise numerous successful firings and other tests,” said Peter Heilmeier, MBDA Deutschland’s Vice President Sales and Business Development. "The direct hits demonstrate that we have made an important step forward in the development programme."

MBDA plans to begin qualification of this very compact missile over the next few years, followed by preparations for series production. One of the areas MBDA is currently working on is the Bundeswehr's night fighting capability requirement.  In this respect, more guided firings are planned for 2017.

Tony joined Vancouver Shipyards (VSY) in 2006 as a Project Manager, before moving over to affiliate company Vancouver Drydock in 2007 in a similar capacity. In 2012, Tony returned to VSY as Director, Planning & Production Control, and was appointed to the role of interim Vice President, Planning & Estimating in November 2016. Prior to his arrival at Seaspan in 2006, Tony worked as a Design & Engineering Manager for Westbay SonShip & Yachts.

As part of the Seaspan Shipyards senior leadership team, Tony is responsible for providing leadership and direction on network planning, detail planning and production control, as well as estimating for new ship construction.

Tony holds a diploma in Civil Design from (BCIT), a professional diploma in Yacht Design from the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology and an Executive Education certificate from the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Sauder School of Business.

Today, the Government of Canada announced that it had selected the Airbus C295W aircraft for its Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Program.

As part of the FWSAR program, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) will receive 16 C295Ws modified for Search and Rescue (SAR).

The contract will also include in service support, provided through a joint venture between Airbus Defence and Space and PAL Aerospace.

Halifax, NS – Nineteen Indigenous students enrolled in the Pathways to Shipbuilding Indigenous Education and Apprenticeship Pilot Program (Pathways to Shipbuilding) are one step closer to a long-term career as metal fabricators building ships for Canada with Irving Shipbuilding. 

Today students celebrated the successful completion of the Pathways to Shipbuilding’s initial 14-week preparatory training required for their entry into the Metal Fabrication program at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC).

 Pathways to Shipbuilding is a unique collaboration of ten industry, government, academic and Indigenous partners. The program, facilitated through the NSCC Irving Shipbuilding Centre of Excellence, is designed to create pathways and support for Indigenous Canadians to enter the shipbuilding industry.

Germany’s Rheinmetall and the family-owned enterprise Day & Zimmermann (D&Z) have established a joint venture company. The two firms announced the move at the AUSA show in Washington D.C. in October 2016. Rheinmetall’s Simulation and Training unit has won another important order in the Middle East-North Africa region. A customer country has contracted with the Düsseldorf-based high-tech Group to modernize and expand an existing live training facility. From 4th to 14th  October 2016, MBDA Deutschland successfully conducted tests of a new high-energy laser effector at a military training facility on Germany’s North Sea coast, marking the next step in the progression from technology to product. In this series of trials, the system was tested under real environmental conditions for the first time.

The primary purpose of this series of trials was to test the beam guidance and tracking system, with a simulated engagement of airborne targets.

Airbus Defence and Space has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CAE of Canada for the acquisition of two additional Full Flight Simulators for the C295 medium transport and surveillance aircraft. One device will be located at the company’s International Training Centre at Seville, Spain and the other with an undisclosed C295 operator. Rheinmetall and Airbus Defence & Space officially transferred the Cargo Hold Trainer – Enhanced (CHT-E) for the A400M transport plane to the Royal Air Force on October 20 at a formal handover ceremony.

This state-of-the-art training system is located in the National Training Centre at the Royal Air Force station in Brize Norton. MBDA has been awarded a £100M Demonstration and Manufacture contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) for the Sea Ceptor air defence system for the UK Royal Navy’s (RN) new class of frigate, the Type 26 (T26) Global Combat Ship (GCS). Airbus Defence and Space and PAL Aerospace have announced a strategic partnership for the provision of In Service Support (ISS) for C295 aircraft operated by members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

The announcement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies to pursue global ISS opportunities. It builds on the existing partnership for Canada’s Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) program.

40 years ago the five hundred year old 1st Infantry Regiment welcomed the first armoured vanguard vehicle (Véhicule de l'avant blindé VAB) into its ranks, from the outset making it the centre of operations. The faithful servant of past operations, it is now ensuring the smooth introduction of the Scorpion Programme.

It was in 1970 that Robert Galley, Minister of Defence, launched the VAB programme, and that SAVIEM filed the patent for the vehicle’s architecture.

As early as 1971, an agreement was signed between SAVIEM, the contractor, designer, architect, engine and powertrain supplier and Creusot-Loire, subcontractor, for the design and manufacture of the body and the assembly of the prototypes.
